dear cold blank, your melodies are deeply engrained into my emotional memory for some of my favourite nights, starting with your remix of "we are rockstars" as the closer of my one year anniversary to my first monthly and continuing with dropping "Los Angeles" at a dope rooftop party last summer as heard here. after falling in love with the "does it offend you, yeah?" remix, the search for more where it came from began. cold blanks' sound is best described as "fresh" the tones are alive and filled with electricity. big and wide open feeling in the textures. bright and demanding. hard but never threatening to the dancefloor, in fact the opposite, quite welcoming as i've seen the people almost about to dance put down their drink and lose control to the sounds of cold blank. they're the kind that put a city like Los Angeles on the map. the melodies are short, computeresq and unforgettable, timeless even. please keep producing these refreshing numbers and breathing life into the parties i'm honored to dj.

it's 2012 and i'm not just gonna sit on my ass with anything, not because it's new and resolutions and blah blah blah... but because i've finally compiled the needed mess in my folders of ableton projects (songs i'm working on) to feel inspired to sort them into albums. not one or two albums, but three separate albums with personalities independent of one another, as described in the video below...

The Drawing Board

let's talk a little bit about art department, as if you've never heard me praise them before. finally i've got my hands on their first full length "The Drawing Board" [Crosstown Rebels] and oh what a treat it was. Jonny White & Kenny Glasgow sure know everything about keeping matters simple and getting the point across clearly. Seth Troxlers' bold and blunt lyrics decorate this gem: "Living the Life" his delivery is like that of a storyteller switching between soulfully sung licks and spoken word aimed directly at and questioning the listener: "Are you living the life you've always wanted to live? Do you come home from work at night, in the day satisfied with a sense of accomplishment having something meaningful done to your day? If so... good for you... keep doing what you're doing." other favourites from TDB include: "Without You", "Vampire Nightclub" and "ICU" which tonally resembles the aforementioned "Living the Life" and "Tell Me Why" an introspective two part concept seemingly about lost time, heartbreak and a love once had as most of the album seems to base itself around.

so much respect for these guys, crosstown rebels and grateful this album exists.

How can you possibly not wanna move to this finely crafted five track debut EP by The Kolour Kult "Are you ready? Are you ready to dance?" is the opening lyric on what producer Martin van Etten and actor turned frontman Jack Prime chose to reveal as their first studio impression "Lose Control" setting the stage clear and without question, that this is in fact your Fall 2011 nu-wave retroesque dance-party-in-a-box (or webpage). The Self Titled EP is available as a free download off of bandcamp, giving you various resolution qualities without a difference in price, making their intentions of good clean fun, clear. I've yet to witness the live show, but the reviews have been raving and often. Hearts Like Ours is an absolute favourite, and you can count on hearing it mixed into my own DJ sets somewhere around the Coeur de Pirate "Comme des enfants" section. Get your live fill of The Kolour Kult and Morgan Louis this Saturday at Bloody Blood Bank Block Party featuring Gavin Russom or be that guy dancing at home to a stream all weekend... either way this EP is undeniably a goddamn blast, directly from the Pet Shop Boys Introspective era.

i've got a friend by the name of Chris Big Money, who just never stops. the fact of the matter is rather intriguing in and of itself, though the music he's produced beginning with his first work "the thought process" up to his latest release "ultra sine waves" has never ceased to impress me. "Purple Pill" is certainly my favourite to funk to of the what seems to be a medicinally influenced electro-laptop-anti-pop themed EP structured of five impressively produced and mastered songs. but take the "yellow pill" to chill... it's so sad to admit my debit card situation has prevented me from downloading the release as of yet, but here's to a heaping leap of growth in terms of production, song writing and simplicity in the music. very well done and worth your support. give a listen and pick up your copy on amazon or itunes for just short of five bucks.

Martin Van Etten has a way of keeping things dark and never brooding. This contrast pulls me in like mosquito to flame. The source is the original work of Mike Hoska whom continues to set the standard in a multitude of house music sub genres and had everything to do with putting Providence on the map. Van Etten simplifies by taking the focus to the break and tells a story with its thematic reoccurrence. The musicality is reminiscent of a Wendy Carlos/Matt Belhamy nocturne; lots of mood, lots of epic. Anticipation is relieved with quite the climatic electro glitch throw down. I'll sum it up with my original impression: this is what would happen if Danger dabbled with a dreamwave track.

it was at coachella 2008 that i'd first experienced this track, where adam freeland graced the sahara tent stage and poured his soul upon the audience in a way unparalleled by any of the djs that weekend. later came to find out he's a big fan of trent reznor, like myself and in 2009 had the pleasure of meeting him in nyc at a live show with his band, promotong their album Cope™ politics and music usually mix poorly to my taste, but when done with such tasteful and universal appeal, i'm game. i'll go as far as to say it was this performance amongst countless others which flipped the switch for me. i'd always been moved by music with an electronic element, but when the pure fruits of this nature came naked and honest through the speakers it told me not only to dance, but to set into motion the path i'm on today. if it weren't for this song damian daviid might have never been a dj and cellar doves may have never been born. the depths of my searches and discoveries have long surpassed the initial inspirations of freeland, justice, aphex twin and the likes of my book, but never discredit the origin.

Wildlife EP - The Vatican - Jämmerdosa 002

been meaning to talk a bit about this immaculate work by The Vatican only the second release off of the Swedish electronic music label Jämmerdosa. Here we are swimming in waters similar to that of aphex twin's S.A.W. and suddenly we begin to feel warm gushes of pulsating synth chord semi-danceable goodness and it feels like that of an unexpected hot spring in a lake on jupiter. These are some seriously chilled out textures with lot's of half time throughout the EP but will mix in nicely as an intermission through just about any minimal tech house dj set or you could simply put yourself into some lucid r.e.m.'s with it. Be sure to peep the new label Jämmerdosa on facebook The Vatican is one in a handful or monikers of Erik Wirkensjö, head author of fixup.se who will grace Parallel with his presence under the name Track Suit come August. The Wildlife EP includes more upbeat remixes by Kalter and Trädet also from Sweden.

You Never Did Anything Wrong

Remember Nicolas Fromageau from M83? neither do I... ;) but really, this is what matters here and now, the standard has been set, slow music is cool again, boo yah ;D

The EP "You Never Did Anything Wrong" released by UK's Sonic Cathedral (SCR023) reminds me a bit of Oceansize's heart wrenching album "Everyone Into Position" and the single "A Glorious Time" got the Anoraak 1983esq dreamwave treatment, delivering nothing but goods, a slow and driving anthem full of motion and emotion ↓↓↓ repeats the line of closure from the original "leave it all behind you, leave it all behind you, leave it all behind you, leave it all behind you, leave it all behind you, leave it all behind you, leave it all behind you" reminiscent of "Wish I were Here, by Freeland" (below) There's plenty to be said about Anoraak, but we'll save that for some not so distant future posts. note: drums that slam you in the face like this are few and far between, peep their album art...

I did my best tryin to keep this one to myself until i got a chance to play it out, but since this Saturday is Parallel at The Salon I figure there's no real loss to be had in subtly exploiting a genuinely brilliant track that's been stuck in my skull since last week, when it crept up on me like a desirable nightmare and kept my stride at a comfortable pace of 118bpm. Dreary is not the word to describe, nor is upbeat, yet it's full of funk and groove. "dark-mode-house" perchance. The original is a tad more old school electro sounding but with a more housey kick than say planet rock, more dancefloor ready than this here Art Department remix.

Jämmerdosa are a brand new electronic label whom I'm honored to have heard about a few weeks back, as tomorrow marks their very first release JMD001 a collaboration between Kalter and Åbäke and these cross continental goodies were a perfect soundtrack to a Sunday morning following a memorable three day run of djing love.death.disco on thursday and dancing with my girlfriend to Micah Jackson and Afrosonic djs at The Salon, Providence.

The EP is an even balance of ambient/computeresq soundscapes with extremely high quality production i must add. Instrumental by nature and for obligatory comparisons i'm gonna go ahead and call it a cross between Sigur Rós - Ágætis Byrjun and NIN - Ghosts with a relaxed groove you can certainly move to or use to mix into a dj set.

before i go off about the nightmarishly alluring sounds of mr. john roman (Ontario Canada) lemme say this...

i'm truly the worst at describing why i dislike something when i know it has value, but still doesn't do it for me. there are some tracks out there that hit really hard yet they just sound like shit to me.

Puppies (Blende Remix) by Dolby Anol (who b.t.w. has an array of excellent tracks b.t.w.)a perfect example of this, it's hard but just sounds all flash flash flash i'm trying too hard watch me do everything i can think of in one track except remember to include any feeling whatsoever.

the original is 'thicker' if you will, with a pretty dope video to boot.

then there's John Roman who's (fucking 21 y/o) able to deliver the goods hard, filthy and addictive as a crack rock.

so here's a track i've grown quiet fond of, exhibiting how you don't need to flex every mussel you have just to prove you're strong. just throw your punches to the face, take the cash and split!

the mix is a perfect balance of groove and chill, movement and still observation from afar meaning one could take a disco nap, or plain boogie to it. dj11:11 takes your ears on a journey through the tonally warm and minimal housey funk, abandoning the flashy "bangers" or safety-net of pop structures, the vocals are sparse and the mix is deep, yet your attention will remain kept throughout all timely and to the point 42minutes.

there are certainly a few other good remixes, but this one does a body good and screams Afrosonic, takes me back to when I lived at Firehouse xiii mixing "In new mirrors"

2:35 in you'll get this sweet hand percussion, 2:38 is exactly when the drum hits for the first time on the upbeat, the very subtle detail which in my opinion makes the song. It falls flat on the funky spot, if you know what I mean. (more specificaly the 28th out of 32 beats, the percussion loop is a reverse of the original) It then carries into ye ole hypnotic Tarantula vocoder you've grown to love.

7:17 in is the "reset your step" moment which I was reminded of in the midst of talking with Nick DeParis tonight at The Salon while listening to Gregor Mittersinker and Timothy O'Keef of Indie Arts and Cozy Music spin a few heart warming sets of nu-disco/tech-house for one of the the first Indie Dance Party in a few months. Avoid mixing in your next tune here or it'll get the flip flopped snare on the kick syndrom.

My good friend Kevin shared this work with me. He knows my taste in video.

This is a product of roughly 7 months of work from 13 students in the 3rd year of the BAA Animation program at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. It tells a great story, with well drawn low brow animations, and a soundtrack that suits it perfectly done by Alexis Marsh.
